Los Angeles, Calif.—-San Jose State University had a tough day at the Mountain Pacific Invitational losing a pair of matches to #11-UC San Diego, 15-5, and Pomona-Pitzer, 8-7.
Finn Pardon and Neil Arnett each scored twice and Ashley Castle, once for the Spartans (2-9) in the team's morning match against UC San Diego. After Arnett scored his first goal of the match at 2:38 of the first quarter to tie the score at 1-1, UC San Diego's Myles Martinez scored 15 seconds later and the Tritons would lead the rest of the way.
#11 UC San Diego led, 2-1, at the end of the first quarter, 6-4 at halftime thanks to Pardon's back-to-back goals late in the quarter and 10-5 after three quarters.
Spartan goalkeeper Yahav Fire was credited with five saves against UC San DIego.
In San Jose State's 8-7 loss to Pomona-Pitzer, Pardon was the top scorer with three goals. Utku Karhan scored twice, and, Niels Hofmeijer and Brad Dennis, once each.
Pomona-Pitzer took 3-0 first-quarter lead after the first 3:04 of the match, but San Jose State inched its way back into a 7-7 tie with 4:17 to go in the fourth quarter on Karhan's second goal.
The Sagehens, who converted 2-of-3 penalty shots, won the match with 0:02 remaining in regulation when Pomona-Pitzer's Dylan Elliott scored his match-high fourth goal of the contest.
Fire faced 34 shots defending the Spartans' cage and was credited with 10 saves.
The Spartans return to action Sunday, September 29, against Air Force for their last match of the Mountain Pacific Invitational at 8:30 a.m.
