Spartans Lose 3-0 At Home To Fresno State

San Jose, Calif.—Haylee Nelson led the Spartans with nine kills, and Drae Fresenius recorded her second consecutive double-double as San José State fell to Fresno State 3-0 Saturday afternoon inside Spartan Gym.
 
Nelson recorded nine kills on 25 attempts to lead the five Spartans who recorded at least two kills during the match. Laura Parts hit .316 for the match with seven kills and led the team with three blocks and two service aces.
 
Fresenius recorded 12 assists and a team-best 17 digs for her second double-double in as many matches. She also had a kill for the Spartans. Mamie Garard had eight assists and six digs, while Sarah Smevog had 16 digs and four assists.


 
The Spartans jumped out to an early 14-11 in the first set until Fresno State used a 6-2 run to take the lead at 17-16 and win the set 25-19. The Bulldogs led set two from first serve to win 25-15. The two teams battled in the third set early on before Fresno State took a 7-6 lead and won 25-18 to take the match.
 
"We have to compete a lot harder than we did today," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We know that we can do better than we did today."
 
San José State goes on the road for the next three matches – at Utah State on October 3, at Boise State on the 5th and at Nevada on the 8th. The Spartans next home match is Saturday the 12th against Air Force at 2 p.m. inside Spartan Gym.
