FORT COLLINS, Colo. – San Jose State women's soccer made a great effort to erase an early deficit, but ultimately was unable to complete the comeback as the Spartans dropped Sunday's MW match at Colorado State by a final of 2-1.
After conceding a pair of first half goals to the Rams, SJSU (4-7-3, 2-3-1) started to mount the comeback in the final 45 minutes as they put up five shots as opposed to just one in the first half. The best of those chances resulted in Kristen Amarikwa's first goal of the season as she took a feed from freshman Sabrina Weinman and deflected a shot off of the Colorado State's keeper's hand to cut the deficit in half in the 57th minute.
Following the goal, the Spartans did well to control the high-power Rams offense as they limited them to just three second-half shots, with one coming on frame. SJSU had two good opportunities to score an equalizer late in the final five minutes. Jamilecxth Becerra had the first look inside the 86th minute, but her shot was saved. Finally, inside the final minute of regulation, Jennifer Orozco had the Spartans' final hope and fired off a shot on frame, but once again it was saved to close out the afternoon.
Colorado State's Taylor Steinke and Caeley Lordemann picked up their second and seventh goals on the year, respectively. The Rams improve to to 8-4-1, 3-2-0 with the win.
With the loss, SJSU sits at 2-3-1 in league play as they ready to host UNLV on Thursday, October 17, and Nevada on Sunday, October 20.
