San Jose, Calif.—Another hot hitting match at home helped the San José State volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Air Force Saturday afternoon inside Spartan Gym and give the Spartans their first Mountain West win of the season.
Latahevai Lousi led the hot Spartan attack as she hit .526 for the match. She had 11 kills on 19 swings and only one error. Fernanda Vido hit .391 for the match as she recorded her second double-double this week with 11 kills and 10 digs.
Thaliana Grajeda hit .417 (6-1-12), while Makayla Lewis added a .308 hitting percentage (6-2-13). Grajeda and Vido each had two service aces to lead the team. Haylee Nelson added seven kills on 15 attempts.
Kaitlynn Zdroik recorded another double-double this season with 17 assists and 11 digs. Sarah Smevog added nine digs and two assists.
Ryann Thomison led the Spartan blocking attack with three block assists. Lousi, Lewis and Grajeda each had two blocks.
San José State hit .387 for the match with 45 kills on 93 attempts and only nine hitting errors. The Spartans won the first set 25-17 as the team hit .550 for the set. The team had 11 kills on 20 attempts and no hitting errors. The next two sets were not quite so perfect as the team did have a few hitting errors, but SJSU was victorious 25-20 and 25-21.
The Spartans do like to play Saturday matches in Spartan Gym. Both home wins have come on a Saturday and the team has recorded single-digit hitting errors in both. Against Marist, the team hit a season-best .459 with 41 kills on 74 attempts and only seven errors in the team's other Saturday win.
With the win, San José State is 6-11 overall and 1-5 in the Mountain West, breaking a six-match losing streak. The team continues at home next week with matches against UNLV on Thursday at 6 p.m. and versus New Mexico on Saturday at 12 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for both matches.
