San Jose, Calif.— Marc Weber scored three of San Jose State's nine goals in a 10-9 loss against No. 7 ranked Pepperdine.
The nine Spartan goals were scored by Weber, Finn Pardon, Justin Pickering, Neil Arnett, Adam Bado, Niels Hofmeijer and Utku Karhan.
The Spartans (3-11) went back and forth with Pepperdine (15-5) in the match at the SRAC. The lead changed hands four times.
Arnett and Hofmeijer scored early for a 2-1 lead, but Pepperdine was ahead, 4-2, at the end of the first quarter. Each team scored twice and Pepperdine still had the lead, 6-4, at halftime.
The Spartans tied Pepperdine for the first time in the second half, 6-6, after Weber's 5-meter penalty goal at 5:41 of the third quarter. After a Wave goal, back-to-back scores by Karhan and Bado put San Jose State ahead, 8-7, with 1:07 to go in the third quarter. Curtis Jarvis' second goal of the quarter tied the score again at 8-8 with 0:22 left in the third quarter.
Pepperdine's Marco Asic scored what would be the game-winning goal at 5:01 of the fourth quarter. The Waves' Max Sprute added a score before Weber of San Jose State closed out the scoring with his match-high third goal with 2:36 remaining.
Spartan goalkeeper Yahav Fire was credited with 13 saves.
The Spartans will return to action Saturday October 19 against Long Beach State in their first Golden Coast Conference match of the season.
