San Jose, Calif.—The theme of Saturday's Spartan volleyball win over New Mexico was "overcome" as San José State defeated New Mexico 3-1 in a Mountain West match inside Spartan Gym.
SJSU went down 0-1 after losing the first set 25-21. The team led 20-19, but the Lobos used a 6-1 run to win the set. San José State then won the next two sets 25-19 and 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the fourth set, but New Mexico responded to take a 6-5 lead and led by as many as five points three times, the last at 21-16. SJSU chipped away at the lead and tied the set at-24 on a Makayla Lewis kill to force a New Mexico timeout. UNM had their second set point at 25-24, but kills by Lewis, Thaliana Grajeda and Fernanda Vido gave San José State the 27-25 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Three Spartans recorded double-doubles in the win led, led by Vido who had a team-best 15 kills and 12 digs, recording her fourth double-double of the season and 16th of her career. Lewis had her first collegiate double-double with season bests of 14 kills and 13 digs. Kaitlynn Zdroik had a career-best 46 assists and 11 digs in the win.
"Our attitude was great today in this win," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "Kaitlynn got us the scoring we needed, looking for ways to score points and distribute the ball offensively."
Other contributing in the win included Sarah Smevog who had a team-best 17 digs, five assists and two service aces. Video led the team with three service aces, while Grajeda recorded four blocks and eight kills. Haylee Nelson recorded 10 kills, two aces, seven digs and three blocks.
