Spartans Lose 3-0 At MW Leader Colorado State

Fort Collins, Colo.— The Spartan volleyball team had leads in sets two and three, but #14 Colorado State used runs to take back the sets and defeat San José State 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-19) Thursday night in a Mountain West match at Moby Arena.
 
Haylee Nelson and Thaliana Grajeda led SJSU with six kills each. Nelson hit .312 for the match (6-1-16) and led the team with 10 digs. Grajeda added four digs and a team-best three block assists.
 
Fernanda Vido added four kills and a team-best two aces, while Sarah Smevog added nine digs and an ace.
 
Colorado State hit .312 for the match and outblocked the Spartans 9-5. The Rams now have an 18-match winning streak after improving to 19-1 overall and 9-0 atop the MW standings.
 
Set 1 – #14 Colorado State led from the first serve as the Spartans tied the set at 2-2 but could never take the lead. The Rams won the set 25-16, while hitting .326 (19-5-43), while San José State hit just .132 (9-4-38).
 
Set 2 – The Spartans jumped out to a 3-0 lead on back-to-back aces by Vido and led 16-12 on a Ram hitting error. Colorado State then used a 13-2 run to win the set 25-18.


 
Set 3 – SJSU again jumped out to an early lead, taking a 5-2 advantage and forcing a timeout by Colorado State. The Rams tied the set at 7-7, but three consecutive Spartan points gave SJSU a 10-7 lead.  The set was tied at 12-12 before four straight  Ram kills gave Colorado State a 16-12 lead that the team did not relinquish en route to the 25-19 win.
 
San José State is now 7-13 overall and 2-7 in the MW. The team travels north to face Wyoming Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. MT/5:30 p.m. PT.
