Spartans Bested In San Diego

Mountain West standings

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – San Jose State women's suffered a setback in their attempt to lock up a spot in the Mountain West Tournament as they fell to San Diego State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in San Diego.

The Spartans conclude the season this upcoming Friday against rival Fresno State in a must-win contest. SJSU needs the three points from the victory and potentially some help to lock down one of the six spots in the tournament. Boise State, San Diego State and Colorado State all secured their places with wins on Sunday.

SJSU currently has 14 points, just one behind Air Force (15) who is currently in sixth place. Full standings can be found in the link above.

In San Diego, the Spartans found themselves unable to capitalize on any of their eight shots attempts despite putting five on-goal. SDSU didn't put up many more shots (12), but found the back of the net on three different occasions. The Aztecs struck first in the 24th minute after a cross got knocked around in traffic and slipped past Spartan goalkeeper Kara Burns, making her first start of the season.

Just seven minutes later, SDSU struck again as senior Chloe Frisch scored her first goal of the year after her shot from long range deflected off of Burns' hand into the net. The Aztecs added a final insurance goal in the 73rd for the decisive 3-0 lead.

The Spartan offense, which had come on strong as of late with back to back two-goal matches, was held in check for the majority of the day. Gabriella Hurtado led the team with a pair of shots on goal.

With the loss, SJSU drops to 4-4-2 in league play and 6-8-4 overall. San Diego State improves to 8-2-0 in the MW and 9-7-1 overall. They are tied with Boise State at the top of the standings entering the final weekend.

The Spartans will look to take care of business against Fresno State on Friday, November 1 at 7:00 p.m. PT. SJSU will honor their seniors prior to first kick.
