Spartans Lose Hard-Fought Match at Wyoming

Laramie, Wyo.—The Spartan volleyball team fought hard against the second-best team in the Mountain West Saturday night, but San José State lost at Wyoming, 3-0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-19).
 
Fernanda Vido had another good hitting night with a .429 percentage. She led the team with 15 kills on 28 attempts and only three errors. Vido also had a team-best two service aces and added nine digs and two block assists.
 
San José State outblocked the Cowgirls, 8-6, led by Thaliana Grajeda who had four blocks, two solo and two assists. She now ranks sixth all-time at SJSU in block assists with 307 and seventh in total blocks with 331. Ryann Thomison also had four blocks, one solo and three assists, to also lead the team.
 
Sarah Smevog led the Spartans in digs with 14 and the only other service ace for the team. Katilynn Zdroik recorded 34 assists, one dig and one block, while Haylee Nelson had seven kills, six digs and a block in the three sets.
 
Set 1: The Spartans hit .436 in the first set (21-4-39), led by nine Vido kills, as the team held a lead for much of the match. SJSU had set point at 24-23 and 26-25 but could never get that final point needed as the Cowgirls won 29-27. The two teams traded the lead five times and had 13 tied scores in the set, including six times at the end of the set.
 Set 2: San José State did not have the hitting success in this set as the team hit -.031. Wyoming took the lead at 4-3 and did not look back in the 25-15 win.

Set 3: SJSU finished the match by hitting .235 in the set. The team opened up an 8-5 lead on back-to-back Vido service aces (the second consecutive match she has done this) and had a 10-8 lead before Wyoming used a 7-0 run to take a 15-10 lead and win the set 25-19.
The Spartans are now 7-14 overall on the season and 2-8 in the MW. The team returns home for three consecutive matches, starting with Halloween night as Boise State visits spooky Spartan Gym for a 6 p.m. match. Utah State then makes an appearance on Saturday, November 2, at 2 p.m., on Alumni Day. Former Spartan head coach Craig Choate will be honored prior to the match.
