Standing Room Only Crowd For Home Opener Against #6 California

San Jose, Calif.—-San Jose State's first home match of the season was played before a standing-room only and spirited crowd at the on-campus Student Recreation and Aquatic Center.

     They were treated a match that went into double overtime, before #6-California pulled out a 10-8 non-conference win over the Spartans.

     The San Jose State home opener was the second time this season the Golden Bears and Spartans played to double overtime. Like the Aggie Invitational in September, Cal came out ahead by two goals.

    The top Spartan scorers were Justin Pickering and Adam Bado scoring two goals each. The other Spartans credited with goals were Ary Kamen, Neil Arnett, Niels Hofmeijer and Brad Dennis. 

    Bado scored the first goal for San Jose State (3-10), but California (10-5) led the Spartans 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.

     The Spartans tied the match, 3-3, in the second quarter after scores by Pickering and Arnett. By the end of the third quarter, California led, 8-6. San Jose State was able to tie te score at 8-8 after Bado scored the tying goal with 18 seconds left in regulation play.

      Cal's Nikos Papanikolaou had the opportunity to score the winning goal, but missed by hitting the cross bar sending the game into overtime. California scored a goal in each overtime period securing the victory.

    Goalkeeper Yahav Fire kept San Jose State in the match and was credited with 16 saves, several at point-blank range. Cal goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg matched Fire with several tough stops of his own and finished with 12 saves.

    The Spartans return to action, Sunday, October 6 at #10 UC Davis at 1:00 p.m.

    The next San Jose State home match is Sunday, October 13, at 12:00 p.m. against Pepperdine. Come out to the SRAC to support your Spartans and the first 50 fans will receive Spartan sunglasses!
