Boise, Idaho—Haylee Nelson and Latahevai Lousi led the Spartan team Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match at Boise State. San José State lost 3-1, at Bronco Gym.
Nelson led the team with 17 kills and a team-best .302 hitting percentage (17-4-43). She also had a team-high five blocks, two solo and three assists. Lousi added 11 kills and four blocks, one solo and three assists, for SJSU.
The Spartans lost the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-17, before winning the third set 26-24. The team jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the set as Sarah Smevog recorded back-to-back service aces and three aces in four serves. The Broncos battled back to tie the set 23-23 and had match point at 24-23, but SJSU got a Nelson kill, block by Laura Parts and Lousi and a Mamie Garard kill to win the third set 26-24.
In the fourth set, SJSU jumped out to another early lead at 8-3 and led 12-12 before Boise State tied the set on a service ace and took the lead on a Spartan hitting error. The Broncos won the fourth set 25-22.
Smevog recorded 20 digs for the match, her second consecutive match with 20+ digs. Makayla Lewis added 10 digs for the team.
San José State is now 5-10 overall and 0-4 in the MW. The team plays at Nevada Tuesday night at 6 p.m. The Spartans return home on Saturday, October 12, to host Air Force at 2 p.m. inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Tickets are available at the door.
