Yu Shoots Record Round to Open Alister MacKenzie

FAIRFAX, Calif. - Senior Sean Yu shot a program-record 61 in his opening round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on Monday morning at the Meadow Club and sits atop the leaderboard going into Tuesday's final round.

Yu, who started his first round on the fourth hole, rattled off 10 birdies over 11 holes between the ninth and first. Yu broke the school record for a single round, becoming the first player in program history to shoot a 61. He matched the program record of 10-under par in a single round (62 on a par 72).

"Sean did really well with the game plan today," said head coach John Kennaday. "He played brilliantly. So many parts of his game were excellent, but the most impressive thing he did was stay focused."

Yu followed up his 10-under 61 with a 5-under 66 in his second round on Monday and is in first place before Tuesday's third and final round. He once again started on the fourth hole and tallied five birdies over his last six holes. He is three shots clear of second place.

As a team, the Spartans are tied for seventh at 14-under (273 - 281). SJSU shot 43 birdies over the first two rounds, the second most thus far at the tournament. Yu has a tournament-best 17 birdies alone.

Behind Yu in first, Bryce Wortman is tied for 39th at 1-under over two rounds. He was even par 71 in his first round and 1-under 70 in his second.

Carl Corpus, playing individually, is tied for 51st at 1-over, while Parker Sisk is also tied for 51st at 1-over. Nate Jetter is tied for 66th at 3-over and Caleb Shetler is tied for 70th at 4-over.

The Spartans tee off at 8 AM on Tuesday, starting on the first hole.
