Yu Ties For Second at Alister MacKenzie Invitational

FAIRFAX, Calif. - Senior Sean Yu tied for second individually while the San José State men's golf team tied for seventh overall at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club.

The Spartans shot a 17-under par as a team (273-281-281), tied with San Diego State. SJSU totaled 60 birdies over three rounds, the third most at the tournament. Pepperdine, at 43-under, won the tournament.

Yu took second at 15-under par for the tournament (61-66-71). His spot near the top of the leaderboard was fueled by his school-record round of 61 (par 71) in the opener. It was the lowest card ever in program history and his 10-under par round matched the program record (62 on a par-72). Yu sat in first place after a 5-under 66 in the second round but a par of 71 in his third and final round allowed Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala to jump one stroke ahead to first at 16-under.

Yu's three-round score of 198 is the fourth sub-200 total in program history. Kevin Velo's 14-under 199 at the Alister MacKenzie in 2017 was the last time a Spartan shot under 200. The total of 198 is tied for the second-lowest ever by a Spartan.

Yu recorded 20 birdies over his three rounds, the most at the tournament. He also posted the best par-4 score, averaging a 3.70. He was even on par-3s and shot a 4.44 on par-5s.

In addition to Yu in second, SJSU had another top-40 finisher in Bryce Wortman, who tied for 36th at 1-under par (71-70-71) for the tournament. Caleb Shelter tied for 41st at even par (73-73-67), Parker Sisk tied for 56th at 3-over and Nate Jetter tied for 61st at 4-over (73-72-72). Freshman Carl Corpus, playing as an individual, tied for 51st at 2-over par (73-70-72).

The Spartans have placed third, third and now seventh in three fall tournaments.

SJSU has one fall tournament left, the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Oct. 21-23.
