Sandoval Secures All-Conference Nod With Standout Performance In Logan

LOGAN, Utah – The San José State cross country teams have been led in part by senior Jennifer Sandoval all season long and that didn't change at Friday's Mountain West Championships in Logan.

Sandoval earned All-Mountain West honors as she eased her way to an eighth place finish with a time of 20:29.2 in the 6k. It was senior Jose Piña who stood out for the Spartans on the men's side, placing 31st (24:09.5) at the conference title race.

"Jenny really ran an outstanding race considering the added elevation for us," said head coach Brad Wick. "I believe that was the best race of her career. Jose put himself in a good position as well but had a bit of trouble with his hamstring and couldn't quite stay in an All-Conference position."

Both teams finished seventh on Friday against some of the toughest competition they have faced this season. Senior Savanna Perez (21:55.6) was the other Spartan to place inside the top-50 on the women's side but sophomores Mikayla Akers (52nd, 22:08.6) and Evelin Meza (54th, 22:13.1) weren't far behind.

In the men's race, Piña was followed closely by sophomore Luis Chavez in 40th (24:21.5) and senior Edgar Bonilla at No. 52 (24:57.3).

"Overall, both teams ran really tough," Wick said. "We did well against tough competition in a tough environment."

Both the men's and women's teams will now turn their focus to the NCAA West Regional, which will serve as their last opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The race is slated for Nov. 15 in Colfax, Washington.
