No Treats For the Spartans Thursday Night

San Jose, Calif.—Halloween did not produce any treats for the San José State volleyball team as the Spartans lost to Boise State 3-0 in a Mountain West match inside Spartan Gym.

Latahevai Lousi led the team with nine kills, and she and Ryann Thomison combined for the team's only three blocks of the match. Haylee Nelson hit .375 with eight kills on 16 attempts and two errors. In all, eight players recorded at least one kills in the match.

Sarah Smevog again led the defense with 15 digs and added four assists. Makayla Lewis and Caitlin Bettenay each had five digs. Bettenay and Fernanda Vido each recorded two service aces.

San José State hit just .154 for the match, while Boise State hit .266.

Set 1: The Spartans hit -.069 with only four kills in the set. The Broncos were up 23-9 before SJSU had a mini 5-0 run to force a Boise State timeout at 23-14. The Broncos then scored the next two points to win 25-14.

Set 2: Boise State jumped out to an early 6-3 lead before the Spartans scored four points to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams traded the lead, and SJSU opened up a three-point lead at 14-11 on back-to-back service aces by Vido. The two teams battled back and forth before Boise State took the lead for good at 22-21 and won 25-22.

Set 3: Despite never having the lead in this season, San José State hit .281 (15-6-32) for the set. The Broncos had the lead from the first serve and won 25-22.

"This was a frustrating match for us," said Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We need to see things more clearly offensively. When we do that, we are successful. Our serving game can put pressure on teams, and our offense needs to the same."

The Spartans continue the three-match homestand Saturday afternoon by hosting Utah State at 2 p.m. We will be honoring former Spartan head coach Craig Choate prior to the match.
