#12 Spartans Edged By Santa Clara, 11-10

Santa Clara, Calif.—-#12 San Jose State started out the week with a 11-10 non conference loss to Santa Clara. 

    Finn Pardon and Adam Bado were the top scorers for the Spartans (7-17). Both players scored two goals each.

    In each of the first three quarters, San Jose State battled back from a two-goal deficit to tie the score. The match was tied seven times.

    The first goal of the match was scored by Santa Clara (14-11) followed by the first San Jose State goal scored by Kamen. Santa Clara and San Jose State both scored two more goals each and the score was tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.

     A Bado power-play goal capped a 3-0 Spartan rally and gave San Jose State its first lead of the match, 4-3, at the 7:08 mark of the second quarter. The teams traded goals the rest of the period until Santa Clara's Patrick Kirk scored the second of his match-high four goals with 0:12 remaining before halftime for a 7-6 halftime lead. 

      After Kirk's third goal to give Santa Clara an 8-6 lead early in the third quarter, Hofmeijer and Pardon each scored a goal to tie the match at 8-8. Santa Clara's Ford Eldridge and Kirk each scored goals to close out the third quarter with the Broncos up, 10-8.

      The final quarter started with Bado and Arnett scoring on consecutive San Jose State possessions to tie the score at 10-10 with 5:38 remaining in regulation play. Two Santa Clara possessions later, Shane Hughes scored on a power play for an 11-10 lead over the Spartans. 

      Despite two power plays the rest of the way, San Jose State was unable to tie the score for the eighth time in the match. The Spartans were just 2-of-10 on the power play at Sullivan Pool on the Santa Clara campus.

    Spartan goalkeeper Yahav Fire was credited with 13 saves.

    The Spartans will return to action Saturday, November 16 for their final home match against #5-ranked Pacific. Come out and celebrate the six graduating seniors!
