San Jose, Calif.—Saturday marked the final time five Spartan volleyball players would take the court at Spartan Gym in a San José State uniform.
The Spartans played a competitive match with Wyoming but were swept 27-25, 25-16, 26-25 in a Mountain West contest.
Three seniors played in the match, led by Thaliana Grajeda who had nine kills and a team-best four blocks (one solo and three assists). She hit .333 for the match and added four digs and two aces. Grajeda cemented herself in the San José State record books, finishing her career with 331 block assists, good for fifth all-time, and 360 total blocks, good for sixth all-time.
Fernanda Vido had five kills, 11 digs and a block, while Kaitlynn Zdroik recorded 16 assists and seven digs in the three sets. Caitlin Bettenay was unable to play due to illness, while Laura Parts did not see action.
Makayla Lewis led the Spartans led the team with 10 kills and 12 digs, her second double-double of the week. Latahevai Lousi added seven kills.
Set 1: The lead changed four times before Wyoming took the final lead at 26-25. The Spartans had set point at 24-23 on a Lousi kill, but a Cowgirl block tied the set at 24-24. Wyoming won the set 27-25 on a service ace.
Set 2: Wyoming took the lead for good at 15-14 and used a 10-2 run to win the set 25-16.
Set 3: The Spartans tried to keep the season alive, fighting back from a 17-12 deficit to tied the set at 22-22. The team had set point at 24-23, forcing a timeout, but a service error, Cowgirl kill and Spartan hitting error gave Wyoming the 26-24 win.
San José State finishes the season with a 10-19 overall record and 5-13 mark in the Mountain West.
