Basallo Goes Back-To-Back For Second Straight Player Of The Week Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San José State sophomore Ayzhiana Basallo earned her second straight Mountain West Player of the Week award on Monday following a pair of standout showings that led her team to two huge victories.

Basallo sets some program history in the process, becoming the first-ever Spartan to win a conference Player of the Week award in back-to-back weeks. The honor is the second of the point guard's career.

Basallo averaged 25.5 points and 9.5 assists per game while shooting 50 percent from three-point range and 90 percent from the free throw line. The San Francisco product recorded her second straight double-double in Thursday's victory over previously-undefeated Buffalo, going for 18 points and 10 assists in the 95-88 win.

Two days later she was at it again, setting a career-high with 33 points against 3-0 San Diego. In addition to her strong offensive outputs, Basallo added five rebounds and a pair of steals to her ledger on the week.

"I know that our team is excited for Shana and Shana will give her teammates all the credit for this award," says head coach Jamie Craighead. "We do this together and I'm happy our team is getting conference-wide recognition. We want to continue to be a valued member of the Mountain West."

The point guard is the first Spartan to win multiple Player of the Week awards in one season since Dezz Ramos received the honor three times on the 2016-17 campaign. Boise State guard Braydey Hodgins was the conference's last back-to-back winner, doing so in the 2018-19 season.

In addition to the award from the conference office, Basallo was also named the league's Player of the Week by College Sports Madness on Monday. She enters the week leading the country and conference in both total points (162) and assists (49).

San José State's 5-2 record is the program's best start through seven games in 15 years (also started 5-2 in the 2004-05 season).

The team will return to action on Friday afternoon at CSU Bakersfield, and fans can catch Basallo and company back at the Provident Credit Union Event Center for the team's Mountain West home opener against San Diego State on December 7.
