San Jose, Calif.—On Alumni Day, the current San José State volleyball team showed their winning ways in a 3-0 victory over Utah State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match that took just one hour and two minutes to play at Spartan Gym.
The Spartans hit .402 for the match, including .464 in the first set, and held Utah State to -.015 hitting percentage and only 10 kills for the entire match.
Haylee Nelson led all hitters with 16 kills and hit .500 for the day (16-4-24). Makayla Lewis added 11 kills and four digs and hit .300. Caitlin Bettenay added nine kills and a team-best 15 digs.
The Spartans served tough during the match, recording eight service aces. Sarah Smevog had a team-best three, while Bettenay and Mamie Garard each recorded two and Nelson had one.
Thaliana Grajeda led the Spartan blocking attack with six, two solo and four assists. Garard added three blocks, five digs, 42 assists and six kills.
Prior to the match, San José State honored former head coach Craig Choate, who is currently an assistant coach at Utah State, and former assistant coach Gary Mano for their contributions to the program.
San José State continues at home next Tuesday, November 5, with a match against Nevada beginning at 6 p.m.
