Spartans Season Comes To An End In Heartbreaker

BOISE, Idaho –San Jose State women's soccer's battled hard for 108 minutes, but ultimately fell in overtime to 4-seed New Mexico in the opening round of the Mountain West Championship Tournament.

The Spartans finish the season 7-9-4 after making their fifth-straight Mountain West Championship Tournament, the only school in the conference to do so.

Tuesday's match saw both teams play an even match with neither defense budging through regulation. The Spartans put up 14 shots with six on goal while the Lobos attempted 19 with 10 on goal. SJSU goalkeeper Ariana Romero had a busy evening and responded with nine saves.

Unfortunately with two minutes to play in the first overtime period, the Spartans were caught in a jam. As Romero attempted to clear the field, New Mexico defender Leilani Baker stepped in front of the kick and blocked it. She then scored into the open net for the golden goal.

All-conference defenders Kristen Amarikwa and Karlee Pottorff led the Spartans with three shots apiece while Lobo Gwen Maly led all players with six shot attempts.
