San Jose, Calif.----- San Jose State University won six out of a possible nine matches on the first day of the SJSU Fall Invite women's tennis tournament.
Playing a three-day, round-robin format with Northern California opponents from the University of the Pacific, the University of San Francisco (USF) and Santa Clara University, the Spartans won five out of six singles matches and one doubles contest. All the wins were against players from Santa Clara.
Sophomore Alba Pedrero Galindo and juniors Laura Malsert and Savannah Sendar each won in straight sets in their singles match for San Jose State. Freshman Lara Marco Mas needed a third set for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Katya Tabachnik. And, freshman Rozalina Youseva added to the team's win total when her opponent, Madison Clarke, retired in the third set due to an injury.
Pedrero Galindo and Marco Mas combined for San Jose State's doubles triumph defeating the Broncos' pair of Lindsey Pesqueira & Lindsay Lynch, 6-0.
USF matched San Jose State with six victories, four in singles and two in doubles. Santa Clara came up with four wins, one in singles and three in doubles. Pacific, with only four players in the lineup, was winless on the first day of action.
The invitational continues Saturday November 9, at the Spartan Tennis Complex starting at 9:00 a.m. San Jose State plays Pacific in singles. At noon, the Spartans take on Santa Clara in doubles and USF and Pacific also match up in doubles action. Santa Clara and USF close out the day with six singles matches starting at 1:00 p.m.
There is no admission charge for the SJSU Fall Invite.
