Spartans Get First Win Of 2020 In Lou Tully Memorial

San Jose, Calif.——#18 San Jose State had its first win of the season in the Lou Tully Memorial. The Spartans posted a 21-7 non-conference victory over Sonoma State University and a 13-5 non-conference loss to #2 Stanford. 

    The match against Sonoma State was the first win for new head coach Beth Harberts. The Spartans scored at least 20 goals for the first time since beating Occidental, 20-3, in 2017.



     The top scorers for the match were Tyanna Supreme, Olga Descalzi Portell and Riley Agerbeek with four goals each. Agerbeek scored her single match best against the Seawolves. Clarissa Wandinger, Zsofia Botka, Jacqui Maisey, Lili Urvari, Abigail Lee, Matilda Moore and Chloe Casey scored the remaining nine goals for the Spartans. 

    A power play goal by Descalzi Portell and an even strength score by Maisey in the first 2:56 of the match gave San Jose State a 2-0 lead. Sonoma State evened the score at 2-2 on a pair of power plays.

    The Spartans took control of the match from there on with scores by Moore, Descalzi Portell's second of the match scores, Wandinger, Urvari and Agerbeek to close out the quarter with a 7-2 lead.

  San Jose State continued to pull away on the scoreboard with an 11-3 halftime advantage and a 14-5 lead after three quarters. The win also marked the first time since the 2017 Occidental win that 10 Spartans scored a goal in one match.

    Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with four saves and goalkeeper  Sophia Reyes was credited with four saves.

    In San Jose State's second match against #2 Stanford, the scorers of the game were Zsofia Botka, Tyanna Supreme, Riley Agerbeek, Lili Urvari and Olga Descalzi Portell.

    The Cardinal, the defending NCAA champions, scored the first three goals of the match and led the entire way. The Spartans stayed within two goals through halftime on scores by Urvari, Botka and Descalzi Portell and trailed, 6-4. Stanford pulled away in the second half outscoring San Jose State, 7-1. Agerbeek scored the  Spartans' second half goal.

    Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with seven saves. Sophia Reyes played the last 5:01 of the fourth quarter and was credited with three saves.

    The Spartans return to action January 25 and 26 in the Cal Cup. San Jose State will play Fresno State, UC Irvine, California and UC Davis.
