Former Spartan Assistant Coach Bryant Young Is Pro Football Hall Of Fame Finalist

Canton, Ohio----- Bryant Young, best known as one of the great defensive tackles in San Francisco 49ers history and also San Jose State University's defensive line coach in 2010, is one of 15 Modern-Era finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2020.

Young was named to an assistant coaching position by Mike MacIntyre, who took over the Spartans program after the late Dick Tomey retired in December 2009. Young was one of the team's nine assistant coaches on a staff that also included current San Jose State football head coach Brent Brennan, who was the wide receivers coach in 2010.

In his first full-time college coaching position, Young coached future all-conference players Travis JohnsonTravis Raciti and Anthony Larceval, three starters on the Spartans' 2012 team that was nationally-ranked at the end of the season with an 11-2 win-loss record. After 2010, Young joined the University of Florida coaching staff as the Gators' defensive line coach.

The 1993 University of Notre Dame graduate played his entire National Football League career with the 49ers. San Francisco's first-round draft pick in 1994, the seventh overall selection, Young started 208 games until he retired after the 2007 season. He was named to the NFL's 1990's All-Decade Team, a four-time All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection and earned a Super Bowl XXIX championship ring in 1995.

His value to the 49ers transcended the playing field. Eight times, he was voted by his teammates as the Len Eshmont Award winner, as the player who best exemplifies courage and leadership. No other 49er, which includes 10 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrines, has won the award more than twice.

Five of the 15 Modern Era finalists will be announced as Class of 2020 Hall of Fame inductees during Super Bowl LIV weekend in Miami, Fla.

A Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist for the first time, Young is the second Class of 2020 finalist with a San Jose State connection. He joins Super Bowl winning head coach and Spartan alum Dick Vermeil, one of eight coaches on the Class of 2020 Centennial Slate as a Hall of Fame finalist.
