Spartans Take 9-8 Victory Over #6 California At Cal Cup

Berkeley, Calif.—— #18 San Jose State finished the Cal Cup with one win and one loss in its matches against #6 California and #12 UC Davis.

The first match for the Spartans was a 9-8 non-conference win against #6 California. This is only the second time in school history that San Jose State beat the Golden Bears. The other Spartan win over Cal was a 14-13 overtime win on February 10, 2007.

Lili Urvari was the top scorer of this match with four goals and the match-winning goal with 0:03 left in the fourth quarter for San Jose State. Urvari tied her San Jose State single-match high of four goals. She scored four goals in the 10-9 overtime loss to Marist at the 2019 LMU Invitational.

San Jose State jumped out to an early 3-1 first-quarter lead on goals by Jacqui Maisey, Olga Descalzi Portell and Urvari. California (5-3) closed out the first quarter with goals by Claire Sonne and Kristina Garcia tying the score at 3-3.

Descalzi Portell added her second goal giving San Jose State a 4-3 lead. But, Brigit Mulder and Grace Raisin answered for the Golden Bears sending Cal into halftime with a 5-4 advantage.

Though Urvari tied the match at 5-5 with her second goal, Cal took its biggest lead of the contest, 7-5, by the end of the third quarter.

Riley Agerbeek pulled the Spartans closer with her first of two fourth-quarter goals at the 5:45 mark. Sonne's second score again gave Cal a two-goal lead, 8-6 with 4:26 to go.

After going just 1-for-6 on the power play through the first 3.5 quarters, the Spartans found the scoring formula on their last two power-play chances to win. Urvari found the cage on a San Jose State power play at 3:09 and a steal and score by Agerbeek at 2:25 tied the match at 8-8.

The Golden Bears had a great chance to regain the lead on a power play in the final minute, but Sonne's shot missed. Cal's Shea Salvino was sent to the penalty box with 0:15 on the clock and Urvari came up with the match winner 12 second later.

Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with six saves in the win over Cal.

The Spartans closed out their four matches at the Cal Cup with a 8-7 non-conference loss to #12 UC Davis (3-3).

The top scorers of this match were Jacqui Maisey and Descalzi Portell with two goals each.

San Jose State's only lead in the match was at 2-1 in the first quarter after a goal by Matilda Moore. UC Davis had a pair of three-goal leads, the last at 7-4 with 3:46 to go in the third quarter.

Goals by Maisey and Urvari cut the deficit to 7-6 at 6:55 of the fourth quarter.   Lili Urvari was the first to score in the final quarter of the match. Emily Aikema of the Aggies and Descalzi Portell traded goals leaving the Spartans behind, 8-7, with less than 2:00 to go. San Jose State had two chances to tie the match and force overtime, but an Agerbeek shot hit the post and Aikema blocked an Urvari shot in the final seconds.

Henry was credited with five saves against UC Davis.

The Spartans will return to action Friday, January 31 in their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match of the season against UCLA. San Jose State will close out the weekend on Saturday, February 1 facing UC Irvine and Long Beach State on the UCLA campus.
