The San Jose State University women's tennis team opens its 2020 spring dual match season, Friday, January 31, hosting Sacramento State University in a non-conference match. First serve at The Spartan Tennis Complex is at 12:00 p.m.
To open the spring season, the Spartans won more than 50 percent of their singles and doubles matches playing in the five-team Fullerton Spring Invitational tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
"We're excited to start 2020. We've had plenty of practice the past week. We're going to have a new player in the lineup (freshman Tess Menten) and some new doubles teams. So, I'm really looking forward to it," said San José State University women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
Freshman Rozalina Youseva leads the Spartans in overall wins with 10 singles victories and triumphs in nine doubles contests. Sophomore Alba Pedrero Galindo tops the squad with 10 wins in doubles action.
Sacramento State (0-2) heads to San Jose State after losing dual matches at Drake, 4-3, and at Nebraska, 7-0. The Hornets were picked to finish fifth in the preseason Big Sky Conference coaches poll.
"Sacramento State always is a gritty team. They're always out there to compete. They always have that 'never lose' mentality. We're going to have some good matches and good battles out there in singles and doubles," added the San Jose State head coach.
The Spartans have wins in their last two dual matches with Sacramento State posting a 4-0 win last year and a 5-2 victory on February 13, 2016.
There is no admission charge to watch the San Jose State-Sacramento State dual match at the Spartan Tennis Complex located at 10th Street near Humboldt. Parking is available at the Park & Ride Lot near the corner of 7th and Humboldt streets.
