San Jose, Calif.----- San Jose State University swept three doubles matches and won five-out-of-six singles contests for a 6-1 non-conference women's tennis victory over Sacramento State at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (1-0) needed less than 30 minutes to take a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard with their success in doubles. None of the three San Jose State duos of Savannah Sendar and Rozalina Youseva at #1, Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert at #2, and Tess Menten and Alba Pedrero Galindo at #3 lost more than two games to their opponent.
"We played pretty well all together. We came out strong in doubles and had a lot of energy in the beginning. The momentum carried over to singles and we were able to play well today," said Culibrk, who increased her combined career win total to 94.
"We wanted to be aggressive at the net and keep the point short. You get rewarded for playing aggressive like that and it gives you a lot of confidence going into singles," said Sendar who was the first Spartan to post a singles win in the opener with her 6-0, 6-4 decision over Ege Tomey of Sacramento State (0-3).
San Jose State went on to clinch the victory with Culibrk, Sendar and Malsert winning their singles matches in straight sets. After Sacramento State's Paige Alter topped Tess Menten of San Jose State, 6-3, 6-3, Alba Pedrero Gailindo and Rozalina Youseva, playing #1 and #2 singles, respectively for the Spartans, staged comebacks to win their third-set tiebreaker and their match.
"We (the coaching staff) told them, this team (Sacramento State) is never going to give up. You can see from the last two matches, Alba (Pedrero Galindo) at #1 and Rozy (Youseva) at #2, they were never going to give up," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka. "
The Spartans are next in action, Thursday, February 6, against the University of San Francisco. The non-conference dual match will be at the Olympic Club with a first serve at Noon.
