Davis, Calif.——#13 San Jose State University brings home a 8-7 non-conference win against #14 UC Davis on a Lili Urvari even-strength goal with 0:49 to go in the match.
It was the same score when these two teams met earlier on January 26 in the Cal Cup in Berkeley, except, this time, the Spartans (4-7) came out on top to end a five-match losing streak, all against top-15 ranked teams.
Tyanna Supreme was the top scorer for San Jose State with a single-match career-high four goals. Urvari had two and Riley Agerbeek and Matilda Moore each had one.
Though UC Davis (6-7) scored in the first minute of play for its only lead of the match, San Jose State had leads of 4-2 and 5-3 in the third quarter. The score was tied five times including three times in the fourth quarter.
UC Davis' Chloe Robinson tied the score, 5-5, at the beginning of the fourth quarter with her second goal of the afternoon at Schaal Aqatics Center. Supreme, who had scored three of her four goals in the first half, scored her fourth on a power play for 6-5 lead with 4:56 remaining. An Agerbeek power play goal with 1:51 left put the Spartans ahead again, 7-6. San Jose State was 3-for-7 in power play chances against the Aggies.
Noelle Wiijnbelt of UC Davis, who matched Superme with four goals tied the score at 7-7 with an even-strength goal with 1:20 remaining. On the next possession, Urvari took a pass from Agerbeek and scored the game-winning goal, her second game-winner of the season with under 1:00 to play. Urvari scored the match-winner with 0:03 to go in the 9-8 win over #6-California in the Cal Cup.
Spartan goalkeeper Hannah Henry was credited with 10 saves.
The Spartans return to action Friday February 21 against Arizona State for their first of four matches in the Barbara Kalbus Invite hosted by UC Irvine.
