Eight More Spartans Qualify For NIC On Day 2 of MW Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.  –  Another solid day in the pool resulted in eight more individuals and one relay punching a ticket to the National Invitational Championships for San Jose State Swim and Dive. The Spartans finished day two of the MW Championships with six scorers including Madelyn Sailors tying for seventh in the 50 freestyle.

The morning started with preliminaries which were kick started by Erin Wayman finishing 17th in the 500 free to qualify for the evening's final. Chloe Limargo and Kate Hanf qualified in the 200 IM and the trio of Sailors, Gabby Heng and Antoinette Loya punched a ticket to the 50 free final.

The Spartans' best final was the 50 free as they picked up 50 team points. Sailors was the top finisher in 23.18, tying her performance from last year's MW Championships for the No. 10 time in the all-time top-10 list. Heng (23.03) and Loya (23.21), swimming in the "B" final, finished 12th and t-14th, respectively. Heng's time is the No. 6 time in program history.

Wayman finished 24th in the 500 free final (5:00.36) while Hanf (2:04.69) and Limargo (2:07.11) finished 21st and 24th, respectively, in the 200 IM final.

"We had a great preliminary session and a lot of that credit goes to Erin Wayman's gutsy performance in the 500 freestyle this morning that really got the team fired up," head coach Sage Hopkins said. "Our sprinters performed tremendously as well. Tomorrow is another strong day for us with a lot of individual events."

The Spartans put a bow on the day with an eighth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. Violani Auva'a swam the first leg with an NIC-qualifying 100 backstroke to put SJSU in a good spot early.

Rebecca Petoe swam the 50 yard butterfly time trial and finished with the No. 2 time in program history (24.91) to qualify for the NIC as well.
