Moraga, Calif.----- San Jose State University began a two-day, two-match women's tennis road trip with a 4-0 non-conference loss to Saint Mary's (Calif.).
The Spartan pair of Rozalina Youseva and Tamara Culibrk playing in the #2-slot were ahead 5-3, but were unable to finish their match before the Saint Mary's pairs of Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre at #1 and Leni Marie Hovda and Liesl Peters at #3 won their matches to give the host Gaels a 1-0 lead going into the six singles matches.
Kozyreva, ranked #22-nationally in the February 18 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, posted a 6-3, 6-0 straight-set victory over San Jose State's Savannah Sendar and Youseva.
As in doubles, the Spartans were close to winning matches, but Saint Mary's (4-3) successfully executed match points at #3 and #5-singles, before Alba Pedrero Galindo at #2, Sendar at #4 and Lara Marco Mas at #6-singles could win a three-set contest after splitting the first two sets.
San Jose State (2-3) has a short drive to the University of the Pacific for a February 22, 2:00 p.m. non-conference dual match to wrap up the weekend.
