Softball Sets New Winning Streak Record At 14 Games

San José, Calif.—The 2020 San José State softball team set a new standard for the program as the Spartans set a new school record winning streak, taking two games Saturday at the Silicon Valley Classic at Spartan Softball Field.
 
The Spartans entered the day tied for the best winning streak in San José State softball history, set at 12 games last year. The team ends the weekend with a 14-2 overall record.
 
San José State 3, Yale 0
The Spartans got a solid pitching performance from Jenessa Ullegue and two hits each from Makayla Englestad and Grace Garvey in the win. Ullegue had a no-hitter through five innings and gave up a solid single up the middle for the only Bulldog hit of the game. Ullegue struck out five of the 23 batters faces as she improves to 1-1 on the season.
 
Garvey scored the team's first run of the game in the fifth inning after starting the inning with a single to right field. With two outs, Englestad drove in Garvey from second with a single up the middle.
 
The team two more runs in the sixth inning as Cassidy Clark scored on a passed ball and Mackenzie Drake scored on a Vicky Gutierrez single to center field.
 
San José State 12, North Dakota 4
The Spartans scored at least two runs in four of the five innings played late Saturday afternoon in the 12-4 win over North Dakota. The team struck for four runs in the first inning, but the Fighting Hawks responded with four runs in the top of the third inning to tie the game at 4-4.
 
SJSU then got two runs in the bottom of the third on a single by Rayohna Sagapolu to score Alyssa Graham and an ND wild pitch to score Jessica Giacoma. The team added three runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning to run-rule North Dakota.
 
Spartan pitcher Caroline Bowman pitched the first three innings as she allowed five hits and four earned runs, no walks and struck out three of the 14 batters faced. Ilona Sullivan picked up the win in relief as she pitched two innings, did not allow a hit and struck out one.
 
San José State hosts Santa Clara on Wednesday, February 26, in a single game at 6 p.m. at Spartan Softball Field before traveling to San Diego for the San Diego Classic next weekend.
