Spartans 12th At Barbara Kalbus Invite After 13-10 OT Loss To LMU

Newport Beach, Calif.----- Despite Olga Descalzi Portell's season-high five goals and a power-play score by teammate Lili Urvari with 0:03 remaining in regulation, the San Jose State University women's water polo team lost to #16-ranked LMU, 13-10, in the 11th place match of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

The 13th-ranked Spartans' 12th place finish is two spots higher than the 14th place finish a year ago in the annual 16-team mid-season tournament of the top-20 teams nationally.

Neither San Jose State (5-10) nor LMU (8-6) had more than a one-goal lead during the first four quarters. Urvari's goal sent the game into overtime tied at 10-10, the tenth tie of the match.

The Lions were the only team to score in the two 3:00 overtime periods.  Kelsey Sengar, who led all players with six goals, scored twice in the first overtime for LMU.

The Spartans had five of their 33 shots in the overtime. LMU goalkeeper Elizabeth Bradley had 13 and was not forced to make a save in overtime. Hannah Harvey had five saves in goal for San Jose State.

San Jose State returns to home to the SRAC, Sunday, March 1, hosting the University of Southern California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match starting at noon. The Trojans won the Barbara Kalbus Invitational defeating #1-ranked Stanford, 10-5.
