Albuquerque, N.M. - Senior Jennifer Sandoval's third top-10 finish in the 5000 meters in as many years highlighted the program's performance on the second day of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Championships.
After placing ninth as a sophomore and eighth a year ago, Sandoval finished in second with a time of 17:03.70 on Friday. The strong showing added eight points to San José State's team total, a tally that would ultimately equal 18 points for a fifth place standing at the end of the day.
On the men's side, the Spartans will enter the final day of the championships in seventh place with a total of 11 points. Freshman James Burbank had the team's best performance of the day, tallying six points for SJSU with his third-place finish in the long jump.
Burbank's mark of 7.28m is the second best in indoor school history (all-time leader is Marlon Anderson, 7.55m on March 15, 1969).

Both the men's and women's teams were jumping for joy as both freshman Mahkaia Lee and junior Holly Stallman tallied points in the women's long jump. Lee placed fourth and earned five team points for her mark of 5.85m while Stallman grabbed a trio of points at 5.78.
Senior Jeanette Zambrano was the team's other point-earner on Friday, adding two to the team's ledger for her seventh-place showing in the women's 5000. Zambrano clocked a time of 17:21.23 to earn the clutch tallies.
While no other Spartan men earned team points on day two, sprinter Roman Johnson made some noise in the preliminaries of the 60 meter dash. Johnson's time of 6.90 seconds was the second-fastest mark in indoor school history.
With plenty of momentum to carry into Saturday, the Spartans now set their sights on the final day of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships. FloTrack will provide final day streaming coverage live from Albuquerque.
