San Diego, Calif.—The Spartans came from behind in two wins Friday as the San José State softball team extended its school-record winning streak to 17 games with wins over Mount Saint Mary's, 4-1, and Long Beach State, 4-3, at the San Diego Classic.
San José State 4, Mount Saint Mary's 1
The Spartans scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 4-1. Alyssa Graham started the inning with a triple to center field and scored on a Mount fielding error that allowed Vicky Gutierrez to reach base. Janessa Lozano then doubled to right center scoring Gutierrez. Ashley Machado, pinch running for Lozano, stole third and then scored on a Rayohna Sagapolu single up the middle.
Shannon Haddad improved to 10-1 on the season as she pitched two innings of starter Caroline Bowman. Haddad struck out four of the sixth batters she faced. Bowman pitched the first five innings, allowing three runs and one unearned run while striking out one.
San José State 4, Long Beach State 3
Janessa Lozano hit her second home run of the season in the sixth inning to give the Spartans the lead for good and eventual victory. Cassidy Clark started the inning with a single to center and stole second. Graham walked on four straight pitches to bring Lozano to the plate. Lozano then hit a shot to center field to score the runs and give SJSU a 4-2 lead at the time.
Long Beach State added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and left a runner on base in the sixth, and went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Spartans started the scoring with a run in the top of the first as Englestad scored on a Suzy Brookshire sacrifice line out to center field.
Haddad pitched her seventh complete game of the year to improve to 11-1 on the season. She allowed four hits, three earned runs and struck out five in 26 batters faced.
San José State plays twice on Saturday at the San Diego Classic – versus St. John's at 9 a.m., and Weber State at 11:30 a.m.
