San Jose, Calif.----- A shorthanded San Jose State University women's tennis team lost to Santa Clara, 4-0, in a non-conference match at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (2-5) only had five players available to cover the three doubles matches and six singles contests in a women's tennis college match. Consequently, Santa Clara had a big advantage on the scoreboard with automatic wins at #6 singles and #3 doubles.
The Broncos won the only completed doubles match as Maddie Pothoff and Katya Tabachnik topped Tamara Culibrk and Laura Malsert of the Spartans, 6-4.
With a 2-0 lead, San Jose State players Savannah Sendar at #3, Malsert at #4 and Lara Marco Mas at #5 won the first set of their respective singles match, but Madison Clarke's 6-4, 6-2 singles win over Culibrk at #2 was the decisive contest in favor of Santa Clara.
"I'm proud of how they competed today. They battled well," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
The Spartans close out the weekend hosting Fullerton State in a non-conference match, Sunday, March 1. First serve at the Spartan Tennis Complex is at Noon.
