San José State University women's basketball player Ayzhiana Basallo and men's basketball player Seneca Knight are the Student-Athletes of the Month for January, presented by Be The Match. (Click here for more information.)
Basallo averaged 21.1 points, 4.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game as the team went 7-1 for the month. She led the Spartans with 28 points a home victory over third-place Boise State, and added 26 points in wins over Colorado State and New Mexico. The Spartans matched the program's second-best January record in school history. Basallo leads the Mountain West in scoring and free throw percentage.
Knight averaged 18.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game for the month of January. He shot 40 percent from the floor, 31.9 percent from three-point range and 73.1 percent from the free throw line. He helped the Spartans to Mountain West wins over New Mexico, Nevada and Air Force during the month, two more than SJSU had all of last season. Knight scored a career-high 30 points at UNLV, two games after posting a then-career-best 28 points in the win over Nevada.
