Ullegue, Spartans Shut Out St. Francis

San José, Calif.—Spartan pitcher Jenessa Ullegue came within one batter of a perfect game as the San José State softball team opened play at the Silicon Valley Classic II with a 1-0 win over St. Francis at Spartan Softball Field.
 
Ullegue had a perfect game through 6 2/3 innings pitched. St. Francis batter Allyn Bezjak battled with Ullegue before taking the 12 pitch of the at bat to right field for the first hit for the Red Flash. Ullegue then surrendered another hit before a pop up to Mackenzie Drake in right field ended the game. For the game, Ullegue struck out five of the 23 batters faced and did not issue a walk.
 
The Spartans only run scored came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Vicky Gutierrez singled to left field to drive in Suzy Brookshire from third base for the 1-0 lead. The Spartan left two runners on base that inning and seven for the game.


 
With the win, San José State is now 20-4 on the season. The Spartans continue play at the Silicon Valley Classic II on Friday with games against Saint Mary's at 3:30 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m.
