BANDON, Ore. - The San Jose State men's golf team entered Monday's second round of the Bandon Dunes Championship tied for 11th. The Spartans will enter Tuesday final round in eighth.
"We got close to really popping a good round today," said head coach John Kennaday. "Sean Yu played really well, so did Bryce Wortman. The team is starting to heat up a little bit. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
The Spartans climbed three spots on the team leaderboard thanks to an incredible round by Yu. The senior shot a 6-under par 65 on Monday, to go from tied for 57th to tied for seventh. He shot a 75 on Monday. He is now three shots back of the leader, UCLA's Devon Bling.
"Sean played better than his round yesterday," Kennaday said. "He just stuck to the plan and it worked out much better today."
Starting on the 12th hole, Yu opened his round with a bang, going eagle-birdie. He carded a bogey on No. 14 but that was his only blemish of the round. Yu had three birdies on the front nine and finished his round with another birdie on No. 11. Monday was Yu's fourth round of 65-or-better this season, including a school-record 61 at the Alister MacKenzie Invite in the fall.
Caleb Shetler (tied for 34th) and Wortman (tied for 30th) each shot a 1-over 72 in their second rounds. Freshman Carl Corpus (tied for 80th) fired a 4-over and Nate Jetter (tied for 83rd) shot a 7-over 78.
As a team, the Spartans shot an even par 284 in their second round. SJSU shot a 12-over 296 on Sunday to open the tournament. Oregon State leads at 10-under while Oregon is second at 4-under.
