Shetler, Yu Earn Mountain West Honors

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose State men's golfers Caleb Shetler and Sean Yu each took home Mountain West postseason honors, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Shetler was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Year while Yu was named to the all-Mountain West team.

Shetler is the first player in San Jose State men's golf history to earn the Mountain West's Freshman of the Year honors. The rookie had a 72.63 scoring average in a shortened 2019-20 season. He posted a low round of 67 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational before posting a 69 and a 68 at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, where the Spartans won the team title.

"Caleb was a force for us this year," said head coach John Kennaday. "He played beyond his years. He had a big round for us to close out a win in Stockton. I can't be more proud."

"I thought we had two fantastic freshmen this year in Caleb and Carl Corpus. I wish both of them could have won the award. I'm excited to see them develop over the next few seasons."

Shetler was in the Spartans' lineup for all seven tournaments this year. He tied for sixth in his collegiate debut at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, shooting a 4-under par 212. He had another top-10 finish at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, shooting another 2-under par 212. He posted 66 birdies on the year, third-most on the roster, with four eagles, tied with Yu for the second-most on the team.

Yu has now claimed all-Mountain West accolades for a second straight season. He is the ninth player in program history to earn multiple all-conference honors. His coach, Kennaday, was the first.

"Sean had a tremendous season," Kennaday said. "He was really starting to heat up in the spring, like he had in the fall as well. Our plan was coming together. It's an absolute shame we couldn't see him play on his home turf at the Western Intercollegiate this year."

Yu, who was also a PING all-Region selection, set a program record with a 70.43 scoring average over 21 rounds played. Over seven straight tournament rounds in October, he averaged a 66. Yu's -1.14 versus par is the first in program history under one. He tallied a program-low round of 61 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational and followed that up with a 64, tied for the third-best in program history, at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational. Yu, at 11-under, took first.

In the spring, Yu won the Genesis Collegiate Showcase, besting a field of top collegiate golfers, to earn an invitation to the PGA TOUR Genesis Invitational. Yu tallied three top-10 finishes in seven collegiate tournaments in 2019-20, with a seventh place showing at the season-ending Bandon Dunes Championship. Yu's par-3 (3.09, 2nd), par-4 (3.97, 1st) and par-5 (4.64, 5th) scoring this season all ranked in the top-5 in SJSU history.
