Woodland, Calif.----- The 2020 San Jose State University women's water polo team had a conference-high and program-best 12 student-athletes named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) academic all-conference team.
The Spartans were the only team in the seven-member MPSF women's water polo conference, the sport's most competitive college conference nationally, to have more than 50 percent of its team members earn the academic honor. San Jose State's previous team-high for one year was nine academic all-conference award winners.
To qualify for the MPSF all-academic recognition in one of the conference's sports, a student-athlete must possess a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average on a 4.00 scale; have at least sophomore standing academically; completed a full year at the conference institution; and participate in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.
"This is wonderful news for our players that excel academically and our team. We have an outstanding group of women who are driven to pursue their academics with a passion and play the game of water polo passionately," said San Jose State University women's water polo head coach Beth Harberts, who earned academic All-MPSF honors twice during her career as a Spartan women's water polo player.
Besides having the most honorees, San José State also had the top-two scholar-athletes based on cumulative grade-point average. Sophomore Clarissa Wandinger from Fremont, Calif., and junior Tyanna Supreme from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, each had better than a 3.85 grade-point average when nominations were submitted.
Supreme, Riley Agerbeek, Hannah Henry, Isabella Schmidt, and Lili Urvari earned their second MPSF All-Academic team honor. Seniors Caroline Kerwin and Jacqui Maisey, and sophomores Olga Descalzi Portell, Emma Hank, Matilda Moore, Sophie Spivack, and Wandinger were named to the academic all-conference team for the first time.
For the 2019-20 academic year, the San Jose State University women's and men's water polo teams each had more than 50 percent of its team members earn academic all-conference honors. The Spartan men's team competes in the six-team Golden Coast Conference.
