SAN JOSE, Calif. - Three San José State University athletics teams were named recipients of a NCAA Public Recognition Award for academic success, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.
The San Jose State women's golf, women's swimming and diving and women's beach volleyball programs earned the maximum possible multi-year score of 1,000 to earn the NCAA's Public Recognition Award, given to schools with programs ranking in the top-10 percent of their respective sports.
The awards are based on the Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores for the 2018-19 school year, according to data released by the NCAA.
- SJSU's three teams earning public recognition is the second most in the CSU system, behind only Cal Poly with four. The Spartans are third in the Mountain West, trailing just Boise State (5) and Colorado State (4).
- The women's golf team earned a perfect 1,000 score for the fourth straight year while beach volleyball was perfect for a third consecutive season. Swimming and diving picked up a maximum score for the first time since the 2010-11 academic year.
"One of our core values is our commitment to academics," said Marie Tuite, director of athletics. "Today's announcement on NCAA APR awards is the latest good news about the academic achievements of our student-athletes and their teams in collaboration with our academic staff members led by Assistant Director of Student Athlete Success Services Julie Stansberry. Recently, we had an all-time high of 106 Spartans named either a President's Scholar or Dean's Scholar in conjunction with the university's Honors Convocation. And we are looking forward to celebrating commencement exercises virtually with our seniors earning their San José State University bachelor's degree in less than two weeks."
First implemented in 2003, the APR provides a real-time measurement of a team's academic success each semester by tracking scholarship student-athletes in the areas of eligibility, retention and graduation. A score of 930 must be maintained in the multi-year APR to qualify for NCAA postseason championship events. The most recent APR multi-year scores are based on the four-year period that includes the 2015-16 through 2018-19 academic years.
