Spartans' Christian Webb Named To Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

Fort Walton Beach, Fla.----- San Jose State University linebacker Christian Webb is one of 114 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players named in the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List.

Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, a quarterback for the University of Florida, the award recognizes college football's top community servant, one who serves others, makes a positive impact on society, and inspires greater service in the world.

Entering his third year with the Spartans, Webb is a first-year graduate student continuing his focus on communication studies, his undergraduate major. He's seen action as a linebacker and special teams defender. Webb is a 2018 and 2019 Mountain West All-Academic award winner in football.

Yet, it is his service in the community that stands out among the Wuerffel Trophy's three components of academics, athletics, and community service. Presently, Webb is serving an internship with the African American Community Service Agency (AACSA) of San Jose as the executive assistant to the executive director after a 2020 spring semester volunteering at the downtown San Jose headquarters two blocks from the university's main campus.

Webb serves as a liaison between the executive director and the agency's board of directors. He establishes the executive director's weekly calendar prioritizing community events, participates in strategic planning initiatives, organizational strategy, content and document management, donor relations, and manages the organization's social media accounts. He also participates in community outreach activities to "… perpetuate and strengthen African American identity, culture, values, traditions, and family life."

The AACSA estimates it serves 25,000 people of all races and cultures annually with programs focused on education, health and wellness, economic development, and social services.

From the 114 players named to the watch list, a group of semifinalists will be announced on November 3. Three finalists will be revealed on November 23. The 2020 Wuerffel Trophy recipient will be announced on December 8 at the National Football Foundation's news conference in New York City and presented December 10 at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show in Atlanta, Ga.
