Austin, Texas--- For the first time in the four-year history of 247Sports.com's 30Under30, a San Jose State University football coach is honored.
Fourth-year wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings is one of the 30 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) coaches, graduate assistants and/or football staff members under the age of 30 recognized by 247Sports.com as "…the next group of college football coaching stars."
Cummings was lauded by the three-person 247Sports.com selection committee for nurturing one of the top pass receiving units nationally in 2019. Current seniors Tre Walker and Bailey Gaither received first-team and honorable mention All-Mountain West honors, respectively. Current sophomore Isaiah Hamilton also was one of the conference's top-10 pass receivers. As a team in 2019, the Spartans finished fourth nationally in passing offense.
247Sports recognized the increasing productivity of the San Jose State wide receivers group to its passing game. In 2017, Cummings' first year with the Spartans, the team was 87th in passing offense. In 2018, San Jose State was 33rd in the same category.
The 29-year old Cummings came to San Jose State after three seasons as a quality control coach at Oregon State. The Los Angeles native played for 2010 through 2013 Oregon State teams and one season in the Canadian Football League before embarking on a coaching career.
Cummings is the second San Jose State University football assistant coach recognized by 247Sports.com in the last 12 months. Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Alonzo Carter was named the 2019 Mountain West Recruiter of the Year.
