More Honors For San Jose State QB Nick Starkel

A five-touchdown passing performance in a win to keep your team undefeated usually is good for multiple postgame recognitions.

That is what San Jose State University quarterback Nick Starkel is experiencing today as the Spartans (2-0, 2-0 Mountain West) prepare for their November 6 Mountain West showdown with San Diego State University (2-0, 2-0 Mountain West) at the Dignity Health Sports Center in Carson, Calif.

Besides being named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, Starkel was one of eight Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) quarterbacks named a Manning Award Star of the Week and one of the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 list for college football's Week #9 games ending on Saturday, October 31.

Football fans can vote for Starkel as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week on the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page.

Sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the Manning Award is named after quarterbacks Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning.

The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is named after the Texas Christian University quarterback who became the first college football player to win the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award and Maxwell Award in the same season when he earned the three honors for his stellar play in 1938.

The Davey O'Brien Award is sponsored by the Davey O'Brien Foundation based in Fort Worth, Texas. As a result of Starkel's 467-yard, single-game best five touchdown performance in the 38-21 win over the University of New Mexico on October 31, he was added to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list as a contender for the 2020 award.

Heading into the weekend action, Starkel has completed 73.7 percent of his passes with only one interception for 693 yards and seven touchdowns. Nationally, he ranks fourth in passing yardage, eighth in total offense and 11th in passing efficiency.
