Colorado Springs, Colo.----- San Jose State University quarterback Nick Starkel is the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to a 38-21 victory over the University of New Mexico in a conference football game.
Starkel completed 34-of-47 passes without an interception for 467 yards and a personal single-game high five touchdowns to keep San Jose State University unbeaten in two games. Two of those touchdown throws, one to wide receiver Bailey Gaither for 69 yards and the second to tight end Sam Olson for one yard, combined with a Matt Mercurio 35-yard field goal broke a 21-21 third quarter tie.
The 464 passing yards is the fifth highest single game passing total by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) quarterback this season. Starkel's five touchdown passes also match the fifth most in the FBS in 2020.
Starkel and the Spartans take on San Diego State University, Friday, November 6, at the Dignity Health Sports Center in Carson, Calif. The CBS Sports Network will televise this battle of unbeatens beginning at 6:00 p.m. (PST). Like the Spartans, the Aztecs have a 2-0 record overall and in Mountain West action.
