October Student Athlete of the Month Announced

San José State University football player Nick Starkel is the Student-Athlete of the Month for October, presented by Hukilau San Jose.

Starkel led the Spartan football team to a 2-0 start for the 2020 season with wins over Air Force (17-6) and New Mexico (38-21). It is the best season start for the Spartans since 1987. In the win over Air Force, Starkel completed 22-of-29 passes for 226 yards, connecting with Derrick Deese, Jr., for two touchdowns.
 
Against New Mexico, Starkel completed 34-of-47 passes for 467 yards, no interceptions and a single-game best five touchdowns. The 464 passing yards is the fifth-highest single-game passing total by a Football Bowl Subdivision quarterback this season. The five touchdown passes also match the fifth-most in the FBS in 2020.
 
For his performance against New Mexico, Starkel received numerous honors/awards.

For the month, Starkel completed 73.7 percent of his passes with only one interception for 693 yards and seven touchdowns. Nationally, he ranks fourth in passing yardage, eighth in total offense and 11th in passing efficiency.
