Tre Jenkins Named Mountain West Defensive Player Of The Week

Colorado Springs, Colo.----- For his most impressive game of his college career, San Jose State University safety Tre Jenkins was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for games ending the weekend of November 7.

The sophomore from Stockton, Calif., in his third start for the undefeated Spartans was credited with a single-game career high nine tackles in the 28-17 win over previously unbeaten San Diego State on November 6.

He also had a tackle for loss, quarterback sack, a forced fumble and an interception, all in the second half as San Jose State improved its season and conference co-leading record to 3-0.

Jenkins was involved in three second-half plays that kept the Spartans in the game and eventually led to the team's comeback victory after trailing 10-0 in the second quarter and 17-14 in the second half.

On San Diego State's first possession of the second half, Jenkins assisted on a tackle for no gain on a 4th-and-1 that ended the Aztecs' drive on the Spartans' 20-yard line.

In the fourth quarter, Jenkins successfully blitzed San Diego State quarterback Connor Baker forcing him to throw a backwards pass that was recovered by Junior Fehoko of the Spartans at the Aztec 17-yard line. Two plays later, Tyler Nevens gave San Jose State the lead for good, 17-14, on a 3-yard run.

Jenkins later ended another San Diego State scoring threat deep in Spartan territory when he intercepted a Baker pass in the end zone. The interception was the Aztecs' third turnover of the game.

Jenkins is the second San Jose State player in as many weeks to win a Mountain West Player of the Week honor. Quarterback Nick Starkel was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week after the New Mexico win on October 31.

San Jose State seeks to remain unbeaten and improve its record to 4-0 when it hosts UNLV, Saturday, November 14 in CEFCU Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
