Brent Brennan Named Werner Ladder AFCA Region 5 Coach Of The Year

Waco, Texas----- For leading San Jose State University to its best regular season record since 1939, San Jose State University football head coach Brent Brennan is the 2020 Werner Ladder American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 5 Coach of the Year.

In his fourth season as head coach, Brennan led the Spartans to a 6-0 record, the program's first Mountain West conference title game, and first regular season winning record since 2012. The Spartans are ranked No. 25 in the latest Amway Coaches and Associated Press polls.

A San Jose State assistant coach during the 2005 through 2010 working for AFCA past president Dick Tomey (1938-2019) and Mike MacIntyre, Brennan returned to the Spartans as head coach in December 2016 after six seasons as an assistant at Oregon State.

The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association's five divisions: Football Bowl Subdivision, Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA. The winners are selected by active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions. These winners will be honored during a virtual AFCA Convention on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 when the AFCA will announce its National Coach of the Year.

Other AFCA Region Coach of the Year honorees in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and finalists for Coach of the Year honors are Luke Fickell of the University of Cincinnati (Region 1), Jamey Chadwell of Coastal Carolina University (Region 2), Tom Allen of the University of Indiana (Region 3), and Doc Holliday of Marshall University (Region 4).

Werner Ladder is the title sponsor of the AFCA Football Bowl Subdivision National and Regional Coach of the Year awards program.

Brennan leads the Spartans on to the Sam Boyd Stadium field in Las Vegas, Saturday, December 19, when they meet Boise State in the Mountain West Football Championship Game. Kickoff is at 1:15 p.m. (PT) with national over-the-air television coverage by FOX Sports.
