Spartan Football Adds 13 To Future Rosters

Adding to a roster competing for a Mountain West championship, San Jose State University opened the December 2020 National Letter-of-Intent period signing 13 football student-athletes covering every position group on offense and defense.

The Spartan newcomers include 10 high school seniors, one community college transfer and two with experience at a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) school.

The nine offensive players consist of three wide receivers, three slated for duty as offensive linemen, a tight end, a quarterback and one running back. A defensive lineman, two linebackers and one defensive back round out the group of signees.

Current high school seniors Branden Alvarez (Centennial High, Corona, Calif.), Assani Berkeley (Mission Prep,) San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and community college transfer Donald McKinney (Santa Ana College) are the wide receiver prospects. Alvarez caught 55 passes for 827 yards and eight touchdowns in his first two varsity seasons. Berkeley averaged 33.5 yards a catch and scored a touchdown on four of his 15 receptions. McKinney averaged 15.5 yards per reception for Santa Ana College as a freshman.

Fernando Carmona (Las Vegas High, Las Vegas, Nev.), Kai Peterson-Davison (Marin Catholic HS, Kentfield, Calif.) and Ryan Stewart (Lincoln Way-East, Frankfort, Ill.) are the new offensive line hopefuls.

Tight end Nathan Lewis (Jesuit High, Carmichael, Calif.), quarterback Walker Eget (West Ranch High, Santa Clarita, Calif.), and Leonard Glass, a running back (San Joaquin Memorial High, Fresno, Calif.) complete the list of signees on offense. Eget passed for 3,250 yards and 40 touchdowns as a junior in 2019. Glass rushed for 2,308 yards, caught 65 passes and scored 28 touchdowns in two seasons for San Joaquin Memorial High.

On defense, Marcel Sanders (Clovis West High, Fresno, Calif.) will compete for playing time in the defensive line. Oregon State transfer Matthew Tago and Bryun Parham are the two linebacker candidates. Tago's older brother, Christian Tago, was a four-year linebacker for the Spartans (2013-16). Cornerback Kavon Baptiste (J.W. North High, Riverside, Calif.), who led his team with five interceptions as a junior in 2019, completes the group of Spartan newcomers.
