Philadelphia, Pa.----- San Jose State University's Brent Brennan is one of 12 national semifinalists for the George Munger Collegiate Coach of the Year Award presented annually by the Maxwell Football Club.
Brennan, who agreed in principle to a contract extension today, directed the Spartans to a 7-0 win-loss record and the Mountain West football championship in 2020. He was named the conference's Coach of the Year and 11 of his players earned either first-team, second-team, or honorable mention all-conference honors.
Tom Allen of Indiana, Iowa State's Matt Campbell, Jamie Chadwell of Coastal Carolina, Ohio State's Ryan Day, Luke Fickell of Cincinnati, Texas A&M's Jimbo Fisher, one-time San Jose State assistant Hugh Freeze now at Liberty, Brian Kelly of Notre Dame, Alabama's Nick Saban, Kalani Sitake of BYU, and Clemson's Dabo Swinney are the other 11 semifinalists.
The Spartans' current season record is the university's best since 1939 when San Jose State completed a perfect season with a 13-0 record.
Presently, the Spartans are listed 19th in the Associated Press and 20th in the Amway Coaches polls and ranked 22nd in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Earlier in the month, Brennan was named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Region 5 "Coach of the Year" and is a finalist for the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award honors.
Three finalists will be named January 12, 2021. The winner will be named January 15.
