San Jose, Calif.— Jenny Heimstead (Miller) returns to the San José State University Athletics Department as the assistant athletics director for compliance, as announced by Eileen Daley, the deputy director of internal operations/SWA for the Spartans. Heimstead begins her new position on February 1.
"We feel very fortunate that Jenny chose to return to the Spartan Family in this capacity during ever-changing COVID times. Bringing 16 years of experience within NCAA athletic compliance and student services, her extensive knowledge will be key to successfully moving forward. Her relatability, infectious positive personality and team-oriented approach are her greatest attributes. We look forward to our student-athletes, coaches, and staff greatly benefiting from her return to San José State," said Daley.
A familiar face to San José State, the former Jennifer Miller worked at San José State for four-plus years as the compliance coordinator (2005-2009). She worked closely with coaches and academic counselors regarding eligibility, rules education and certification of freshmen and transfers. Heimstead graduated in 2008 from the NACWAA/HERS Institute for Administrative Advancement.
"It is an honor to return to San José State University, where my athletics career began. It feels like a homecoming. I would like to thank Deputy Director Eileen Daley, Athletics Director Marie Tuite and President Mary Papazian for this extraordinary opportunity to serve the Spartans again. I am looking forward to working with new staff/faculty members and student-athletes and seeing some familiar faces as well," said Heimstead.
Heimstead comes to San José State from Cal Poly Pomona where she is in her seventh year as the Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance and Internal Relations. She provided compliance oversight for the department and issued national and conference letters-of-intent. She worked closely with the Financial Aid Office, Registrar's Office, Housing Office, International Office, bookstore and ASI to ensure compliance with NCAA rules. Heimstead also served on the Racial Equity Subcommitee, the Student Engagement Committee, the ASI Board of Governors and worked several athletic department events including hosting several postseason championships. Heimstead also served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor.
Prior to position at Cal Poly Pomona, Heimstead spent three years (2011-14) as the Director of Compliance at UC Riverside where she developed and coordinated a comprehensive athletics compliance office and provided guidance and support to the department. Heimstead worked for two years as the Compliance Coordinator at UC Irvine (2009-11) after leaving San José State.
Currently, she is a member of Women Leaders in College Sport (formerly NACWAA) and the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC). She has served on the NCAA Academics Requirement Committee (vice chair), the DII Interpretation Subcommittee, the NCAA Subcommitee for Initial Eligibility and the NCAA Student Records Review Committee (chair).
Heimstead graduated from Humboldt State with a bachelor of arts degree in liberal studies in 2003 where competed in cross country and track and field. She also has completed her coursework from San José State for her master's degree in kinesiology-sport sociology.
